I need to build a backend for a school management system: users, roles, classes, grades, an admin panel for staff. Django or FastAPI?

For what you describe, a CRUD-heavy app with auth, permissions and an admin panel for non-developers, Django is the better fit:

- The Django admin gives you a working staff interface on day one. - Built-in auth, permissions, migrations, forms, and a mature ORM. - Django REST Framework (or Django Ninja) if you need a JSON API for a mobile app.

FastAPI shines for API-only services, high-concurrency async I/O, ML model serving, and when you want Pydantic-typed request/response models with auto-generated OpenAPI docs. You assemble the rest yourself (SQLAlchemy, Alembic, auth).

Many teams use both: Django for the main product, FastAPI for a specialized microservice.

One more point for Django: its long-term stability. A school system will probably be maintained for years by different people, and Django's conventions make it easier for a new developer to find their way around.
